The Annoying Things That Happen at Owambes

Saturday afternoons are always buzzing with lavish parties—popularly known as owambes— thrown to celebrate birthdays, weddings or anniversaries, amongst others.

While these owambes are always lit- filled with all kinds of food, beautiful people, colourful outfits and more, there are some annoying things that could affect the quality of experience. If you are an owambe expert, you might agree with us that these are some of the most annoying things that could happen:

Not getting served food on time (or at all)

Food is a very important part of owambes. Some people only eat light meals (or eat nothing at all) before attending owambes because they know they’ll eat to their heart’s content at the event. From Ofada Rice & Ayamase Stew to Amala & Ewedu & Gbegiri, Pounded Yam & Edikang-Ikong and the usual suspects- Jollof & Fried Rice, amongst others, an owambe is nothing without food.

So, it’s annoying when you sit for hours waiting for food, hearing your stomach churn as the band plays on. It’s even worse when you see other people getting served while your table is empty. But you want to know what’s the worst? Not getting served at all because the food wasn’t enough. Imagine buying expensive aso-ebi and battling traffic only to go home hungry. Error.

When you get served food and it’s not good

It sucks when you wait for food eagerly, only to get disappointed by the quality of the food. Whether it’s jollof rice that needs more seasoning, pounded yam that has lumps, or ofada rice that isn’t spicy enough.

Overzealous Protocol Officers

There’s nothing as annoying as dealing with oversabi security officers. You show up wearing aso-ebi, show them your invitation card but they still feel the need to make calls to grant you entry. Excuse me???

Greedy Guests

These ones will collect as many rounds of food as possible and even lie that they haven’t gotten food— even though they already put their food into takeaway coolers that they brought from home. It’s people like these that end up causing food shortages, leaving other people without food.

Unavailable Parking Space

You get to the venue and you have to fight with the parking officials for parking space, move your car around several times and even park meters away from the venue, leaving you to walk all the way down, sweating. How annoying.
