How To Build Social Capital And Grow Your Network

The friends you make today are what you will tomorrow refer to as “connections”. A strong network can open up doors of possibilities for you, connect you with the right people, and give you visibility. Therefore, building a solid network is one of the most important things you can do for the advancement of your career; regardless of your industry, age or where you are on the career ladder.

That being said, these are some sure tactics to help build your social capital and network your way to career advancement.

Be strategic. When your purpose/goal is defined, strategically make alliances/friendships with people who align with the future you’re trying to build. This doesn’t mean you can’t have acquaintances but rather, you’re selective about the people you want to foster positive relationships with. Have a laser focus on the people you want to build relationships with for career advancement.

Be proactive. Proactive networking is not for today but for the unforeseeable near future. That way, landing another job will be a breeze and you do not have to be in the pool of millions of job seekers waiting for a call-back.

Be Valuable. Nobody likes a parasitic relationship. If you’re seeking valuable people to grow your network, then you must also be a valuable person. Building social capital is basically an exchange of value.

Create time to network. If your daily routine is to go to work and back home, see and talk to the same set of people that you do every day, then you’re limiting your network. Be intentional about networking and schedule time in your week to meet new people.

Use social media well. Social media is a great way to build social capital. With friend requests on Facebook or connection invites on LinkedIn, making connections has never been easier. The possibilities of social media are infinite so use it to your advantage. Build relationships with people on social media by sharing/engaging with their content and being interested in their passions beyond surface level.

Reach out. Your old colleagues, classmates, etc. play pivotal roles when growing your network. Nurture the relationships you already have, reach out to them, catch up and stay connected.
