Let’s meet you (Your name, what you do and where you are from)

My name is Samson Bright Dorcas, I am a professional makeup artist from Oyo State.

How long have you been doing this?

I have been in the beauty industry for 6 years but started professionally 3 years ago.

What inspired you to go into business?

There were a lot of beautiful inspirations back then, but the biggest of them was the opportunity to make people happy. Makeup has a transformational power that makes people feel great about themselves. One touch of makeup helps people see the beauty that exists in them, and has a way of improving their self-confidence.

What are the challenges you face as a young entrepreneur?

As a young entrepreneur, the first challenge I face is lack of start-up capital. No matter the vision or idea or the type of industry anyone wishes to go into as a beginner or an upcoming entrepreneur, they need money to put their vision to fruition. As a makeup artist, I need a lot of makeup products and they’re very expensive.

Also, I would say stress and self-doubt. This is because I occupy many roles in the business; CEO, Secretary, Sales Representative, etc. and doing all can be draining.

Lastly, creating the right image is vital and it’s a big challenge on its own. I’m constantly trying to deliver excellence because I want customers to trust my brand. While this is good, it’s very demanding.

What was your highest and lowest point since you started this journey?

It’s hard for me to say what my lowest point was as an entrepreneur. I will say there are always low points every year. There are always times when business slows down and I’m unhappy. Having a slow week sometimes is nice. But a slow month- two or three slow months in a row. it has happened to me and it still does. I remember getting tired of having photo shoot sessions to advertise my business because I was spending money and nobody was booking me.

My highest point doesn’t stay in the past. It’s always after every beauty session; the smile my client gives me always satisfies me.

What do you aim to achieve in the next 12 months in relation to your business?

In the next year, I want to increase my customer base. I have been planning towards printing more flyers and business cards, changing the appearance of my studio to attract more people, creating more beautiful content on my business page and probably changing some of my products to better ones.

What are your short and long-term goals?

My short-term goals are:

  1. Going for an upgrade with big brands in Nigeria that are better than myself
  2. Increasing my social media followers and engagement
  3. Creating more beautiful content on social media to showcase my business
  4. Attending more entrepreneur conferences for more knowledge on how to become a better business person
  5. Having enough students to train and becoming a better beauty facilitator.

My long-term goals are:

  1. Collaborating with celebrities
  2. Doing makeup for fashion shows
  3. Launching additional locations for my studio
  4. Creating my own line of makeup products
  5. Monetizing my business page on Instagram
  6. Finding more mentors (I have one already but I need more)

Which individuals do you get inspiration from and why?

Mrs Olowoyeye Olabisi, she’s a professional makeup artist, a civil defence officer and my boss. Aunty Bisi is a very strong entrepreneur who loves to build other entrepreneurs, especially when she senses your passion.

She motivates me every blessed day to improve, and I will never stop emphasizing how my brand can attract great people if I keep investing in my craft. This mindset I got from her has brought me to where I am today and I know it is still taking me places.

How do you unwind?

Music!! I don’t joke with good music while working and after. It brings out the best in my craft and helps me relax whenever I need to.

What advice would you give your fellow Flexxers who are on this path?

  1. Be passionate! Get yourself to love your craft, don’t just be there because people are doing it or because there’s money there. Please do it because you love it.
  2. Don’t relent! Challenges are part of what motivates entrepreneurs, so don’t run from them. Instead, face them and win. You will realize how those big challenges become your stepping stone.
  3. Invest in your craft. As a makeup artist or anything else, you need to keep upgrading yourself.
  4. Be in competition with yourself not with other entrepreneurs. Make sure your next job gets better than your last job.
  5. Be strategic, work smart instead of working hard.
