Which of these have you met at the market or streets?

1. Fine butter bread crooner

They are what you call ‘early morning cry’. Unless you live in a very fancy neighbourhood, you cannot miss these. 2. Fine girl, Angel

It doesn’t matter whether the so-called lady is pretty. They will call you fine girl in hopes that you notice them and what they are selling. There are other cat-calls like angel, my size, my brother and so on. If they haven’t tried to connect with you, then they are not one of the best street salespeople after all.

3. Buy my sweet or I beg

Have you encountered a former beggar hawking by a motor park? They are sometimes near tears, using their past begging skills to persuade you or giving accusatory looks. 4. Why you no thief am

They can be classified under the mean category. Most markets, not just in Lagos, but other parts of Nigeria, like to ‘price’ goods. But there are some traders that once you call a really low price which is most times beyond their cost price, they become angry and turn on the customer.

5. Silent treatment

Just like the previous one, they can be amicable until you price down. They don’t bother telling you off. They will simply give you the silent treatment. ‘When you do tire, you go commot for my shop’.

6. It’s because of you o

After making you price down the ridiculous amount, they finally settle for an amount and make it sound like they did you a favour.

7. Na the original

If you were buying bread, they will tell you that it just arrived fresh that morning, even though it’s been sitting on the shelf for two days. They will tell you that the goods are original UK-made. Anything they feel you want to hear, they will tell you.
