It’s no secret that Nigerians revere certain professions and hold students who choose those paths in high regard. While more individuals are gradually embracing unconventional career paths because they realize that they are just as valid as the conventional ones, the average Nigerian wants to brag about being connected to individuals in certain professions.
If you’re a student majoring in any of these courses, we’re pretty sure you are familiar with these hard facts:
Law
Firstly, Law. Nigerian adults love legal practitioners so much. If you’re a Law student or graduate, you must be used to being called ‘The Law’, ‘Your Honour’ or ‘Barrister’. They’ll tell you things like ‘I need you to sue one of my clients’ or ‘If I enter trouble, you’ll defend me, abi’?
Medicine
Ask most of your peers and they’ll tell you that their parents wanted them to become doctors. The profession is such a noble one, and anyone studying Medicine in school is automatically a celebrity amongst Nigerian adults. They’ll ask you all kinds of medical questions, expecting you to know it all.

Engineering
They probably don’t even care to know what field of engineering you are studying. All they know is that you deal with wires, electricity and machines. If there’s an issue with the refrigerator, air conditioner or electricity meter, they expect you to know how to solve it. If you can’t, they’ll ask you ‘Shebi you studied Engineering at school? Have you forgotten what they taught you?’
Finance and Accounting
Asides from the fact that they expect you to make a whole lot of money, Nigerians love this course because they expect you to be a genius with numbers. They can ask you to solve quick math problems like ‘What’s 225 million divided by 102 thousand’ at random moments. 😂
International Relations
Meanwhile, if you are studying International Relations, you can attest to the fact that most people (especially your parents) believe you are going to end up becoming an Ambassador to a world power like The United States of America or England. They also expect you to know almost everything about world events and the latest happenings in the international scene.
Architecture
This is undoubtedly one of the most respected courses in Nigeria. If you are studying this course, you’re probably used to your parents bragging about you to their friends and colleagues. They believe you will design some iconic Nigerian monuments in the future and they often ask for your opinions on the current state of Nigerian infrastructure.
Petroleum Engineering
They believe you are going to be the next Folorunsho Alakija or Femi Otedola and that you will make so much money when you graduate from school and own an oil conglomerate in the future.
Economics
They’ll ask you about the state of the current economy and your predictions for the coming years. At any given opportunity, they’ll sit you down to ask you about the exchange rates and inflation.
Furthermore, they believe you are going to hold a significant position in a global organization. If Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala could become the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, why can’t you?
