Imagine you were out on a date with your dream guy or babe and suddenly your feet began to emanate this odour and itch between your toes. You both know where the smell is coming from but your date is too polite to mention it. Oh no, that date is ruined for you, because you’d most likely be counting every second until you can escape.
You could smile sheepishly and blame it on your shoes, maybe if you pull them and leave them outside, your feet will be odourless? Guess again. The smell did not originate from your shoe but your feet being enclosed and sweaty in the shoes. You might take off some of the stinks but your feet will smell until you have had a chance to wash thoroughly.
Why do some feet smell?
Just like your skin, your feet are covered in sweat glands, so that when you wear shoes that are close-toed and run around in them all day, your feet get sweaty.
The sweat provides a prime environment for bacteria to flourish because perspiration isn’t allowed to evaporate in the closed shoes and their metabolic processes emit a certain smell.
According to UPMC Health Beat, there is a type of bacteria called brevibacterium that lives between the toes, it thrives in a damp, salty environment, and produces the cheese-like smell of feet.
How do you get rid of feet odour?
1. Keep your feet clean and dry
Do not contribute to the problem by wearing shoes on damp dirty feet. Wash well with soap and water, towel dry, before slipping into a shoe.
2. Wash in between the toes
This is where the bacteria are having the time of their lives. If you wash your feet hurriedly and ignore in between the toes, the problem will persist. So scrub thoroughly in between your toes.
3. Use foot deodorant
If you can’t find a deodorant specifically for your feet, you can use the same one you use for your armpit or an antiperspirant. They function the same. The goal is to keep your feet dry.

4. Give your shoe time
Your shoes contribute a great deal to the problem. If the shoes you wore the day before is damp from sweat or rain, air it out and wear another shoe the following day. Let your shoes breathe.
5. Wear clean socks (Not the one you’ve been wearing unwashed for one week)
What the socks do for your feet is that it absorbs the sweat and doesn’t allow it to get to your shoes. Plus it is easy to wash and dry socks rather than shoes. Now, you don’t have to wear socks on sandals as they are opened and have a lot of breathing space. Besides, you don’t want to ruin fashion.
6. Healthy diet
Having a balanced meal[diet] will help reduce your chances of getting smelly feet.
7. Murder the bacteria with warm water
Add salt in warm water and soak your feet for 10-20 minutes. This will help get rid of the bacteria that is causing the bad feet odour.
If you go through these natural processes and your feet are still bent on embarrassing you, then it’s high time you visit the doctor or podiatrist to tell you the next level of care.
