Greenhouse farming: Why it should be the next revolution in Nigeria

There has been a major drive towards agriculture and a push by the government to introduce large scale farming back to the culture of Nigerians, just like the old days. This push has been geared towards the youths to serve as an alternative source of employment.

With climate change, decreasing land sizes (deforestation), pollution, irregular or excessive rainfall in Nigeria, the need to move to tech-based farming is becoming more and more apparent. Besides, the methods of farming currently employed by a majority of Nigerians are primitive when compared to other parts of the world like the Netherlands, where a greenhouse MTN: 34051090487000082 revolution has taken place.

What greenhouse and greenhouse farming mean

A greenhouse is an enclosed space used for growing crops. The temperature, water, and other much-needed nutrients crops need to grow can be controlled in their right amount. UV light sources that are beneficial to plant growth and a water control system can as well be introduced.

Presently, non-soil based crop growing can be found in some greenhouses around the world, with computers used in monitoring and controlling its various system. One of the benefits of greenhouse farming is that crops can be grown throughout the year and not only at specific seasons.

In addition, greenhouse farming has the potential to solve the problems of food scarcity which hits major parts of Nigeria at certain times of the year. A case study is the tomato scarcity of 2017 which affected majority of Nigerians all over the country.

Greenhouse farming is one such system which should be adopted by Nigerians as a farming practice.
