Things to avoid doing at an office Christmas party

A couple of institutions organize parties at the end of the year for their staff. This usually takes place in the festive month of December, perhaps at the last work week of the year. In some organizations, staff are allowed to come along with a “plus one”, which could be either friend or family.

We understand this time is for you to wind down. But if you still want your job, there are certain things to avoid doing at the party. Here are a few of them:

Do not drink too much

Depending on the nature of your workplace, alcoholic beverages could be part of the refreshments. Having too many alcoholic drinks is a no-no because you will be socializing with your colleagues and alcohol can impair your judgement. If you aren’t sure of your drinking limit, it’s a good idea to ignore alcohol entirely.

Do not dress inappropriately

No matter the theme of the Christmas party, do not wear a provocative outfit that causes a stir and eventually, gets disapproved by your boss.

Getting physical with colleagues

Huh? We understand it’s a party and everyone wants to have fun. But, your HR is the chaperone and it even gets worse when the person never consented to your advances. So, keep your hands to yourself.

Talking about work

Even if you really love work or your intentions are to impress your boss, do not discuss work projects at your office party. You do not want to be the Debbie Downer in the room. You’re not at a brainstorm session, loosen up a little.

Asking for a raise

Your colleagues can’t be discussing their Christmas playlist and you’re whining about a raise.

Hence, now isn’t the time to talk about your current salary and how you can barely cope.

Not showing up

You may not be in a partying mood, but you should show up regardless. Who knows? You may end up enjoying yourself, and even bond well with colleagues.
