Job Interview: 5 Reasons Why You Don’t Get A Call-Back

It can be daunting to be excited about being called for an interview to get a dream job, only to wait in vain for a reply or get a rejection letter. But the feeling is worse when it keeps recurring and you start wondering whether you are qualified at all.

Oh, but you are not alone, as many top executives have been rejected too. And you are as good as you said, you just need to consider some major things. If after going through them and you still don’t get a call-back, then we can consider your village people.

Check out these 5 reasons why you might not get a call-back after a job interview:

1. Last CV update was in 2017

The first thing an interviewer finds out about you is in your CV. And if there’s nothing in it, they’d assume you have nothing also. Your CV should make them eager to meet you. Don’t forget to add a cover letter or forget to modify it for each interview. It’s not that stressful. Just remember to change the date and minute important details.

2. You and your CV are different people

There are folks who hand over the job of writing their CV to business centre attendants. They copy a couple of big words and make your CV cumbersome. You too…proudly carry that to an interview, only to find out that you cannot defend it. Your CV should be a reflection of you. Even if all you know how to do is speak, describe how the intonation of your voice can reach all 12 octaves. Make it interesting, make it ‘You’.

3. You don’t know Jack about the company

This is too obvious, yet many fall victim. Because you have applied to so many companies and attended many interviews, you start showing up for the sake of it, acting like you’re coming to audit their books. Although trying and failing can be discouraging, consistency is what will finally give you that much-deserved job. So, take interest and look up everything you can about the company before showing up for the interview.

4. Your village people took your voice

Okay, let’s be real and blame it on anxiety. You were nervous. It happens to the best of us. You got to the interview location and forgot everything you knew. Not until you stepped outside did you start remembering what you should have said. Does that sound familiar? What you can do is prep your self-confidence before you get there. Tell your mirror that they are fellow humans like you and if they don’t take you, it’s their loss because you’re damn good at what you do. Is somebody feeling like a rockstar already? LOL. Calm down and own that interview room.

5. Jack of all trades but master of none

Have you ever been asked to describe the colour ‘Pink’ to a blind man at an interview? It sounds ridiculous doesn’t it, especially since it has nothing to do with the job. But it tests your interpersonal skills, how you relate or handle situations, how imaginative you are and the likes. Piling certifications is good but that is not all that is needed. You still have to deliver. And delivering starts with basic human skills. You can read more, interact with others and participate in teamwork to improve your soft skills.
