Looking for A Flatmate? Here Are Some Factors to Consider

While school resumptions across the country start to pick up, it’s advisable to commence making plans ahead for the next semester.

For one, you could decide to reside off-campus and rent an apartment, so you can have some space to yourself and guarantee your safety to some extent if you can afford it. If you don’t intend to live alone, you’ll need to find a flatmate that will not only be willing to split the cost of rent but will give you peace of mind, as well. You certainly do not want to deal with stress and drama every day, while trying to manage your academic responsibilities, do you?

You’ve seen shows like Friends, New Girl and 2 Broke Girls, so you know how important it is to have a cool flatmate.

We know that finding an ideal flatmate is not an easy task, so we’ve lined up some factors that you should consider in your search:

Familiarity

When looking for a flatmate, it’s best to look for someone you know. The person doesn’t have to be in your close friends’ group (because good friends don’t always make good housemates) but you should choose someone you know remotely well and are compatible with.

Allergies

If you’re moving in with someone, it’s important to ask (politely) if they have any allergies or conditions you need to know about, ahead of time. This will help you know if you need to make some lifestyle changes or look for another candidate.

Lifestyle Habits

These lifestyle habits could include drinking, smoking and drug use. It’s important to find out what their lifestyle habits are so that you can determine whether or not you can put up with them. You don’t want any funny surprises after you move in.

You can also ask if they spend late nights out, have visitors around often, or if they have any pets. While asking these questions, be polite and avoid being intrusive or judgemental.

Pet Peeves

You should also ask them what their pet peeves (things that they find annoying) are so that you can know if they resemble any habits you have. This will help you make adjustments where necessary, or continue your search for another roommate who can deal with any excesses you might have.

Hygiene

This one’s pretty tough to determine until you move in with the person. However, you can politely ask them what their cleaning habits are- what chores they prefer, how often they think spaces should be cleaned and more. Also, pay attention to their hygiene, as that could give you some insight into their attitude towards cleanliness.

If they have a hustle, you need to know what it is. This might seem like an intrusive question to ask, but it’s important to ask anyway. You might get excited seeing them wear the latest clothes or owning the latest gadgets but you need to know that they have a legitimate source of income and are also comfortable enough to split housing costs and other bills with you. Once again, you don’t want any funny surprises, do you?

Schedule

Do they often get home late? Do they go on trips often? What time do they leave for lectures? Asking questions like these will help you plan and work your way around conflicting schedules and late nights.
