Singing…Christmas is coming, New Year will follow…you can finish it yourself. These two special days amongst many others are quite significant in most countries. There are other popular days like Eid el Fitr, Democracy Day, Independence Day, Easter and the likes.
How was your Independence Day celebration, by the way? Anything significant takes place? Since we are familiar with the special days of these sorts, we are not going to talk about them. Instead, we will put the spotlight on special days that haven’t gotten enough popularity but should be right up there.
Here are 10 special days or months that should be given due recognition;
1. International Day for the Abolition of Slavery- December 2
This is a yearly event on December 2, organized since 1986 by the United Nations General Assembly. It is to raise awareness of the atrocities of modern slavery, like human trafficking, exploitation and prostitution of others. This is something we sing out on rooftops.
2. World Food Day- Oct. 16

3. World Teachers Day- October 5
World Teachers’ Day, also known as International Teachers Day, is an international day held annually on October 5. Teachers are not given enough accolades, despite the fact that they are the reasons we have so many upstanding citizens in our society. We should most certainly recognise them. (Please remove too)
4. International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists 2020- November 2
The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is an UN-recognized international day observed annually on 2 November. On the 24th of September, media lawyers like Noah Ajare and journalists like Monica Aigbe silver bird news correspondents in Benin, gathered together in a virtual meeting to discuss the regulation of media and the implications of freedom of speech. They shared their grievances with not being able to reveal the true events of matters for fear being locked up.
5. World Suicide Prevention Day- September 10
World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003.

6. International Day of Yoga- June 21
The International Day of Yoga is celebrated] annually on 21 June since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.
7. International Day of Peace- September 21
It is a worldwide event celebrated by the UN[ United Nations] member States. Without peace celebrations and recognition, there will be outbreaks and divisions in many countries and among ethnic groups.
8. United Nations Day- October 24
The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945. They are committed to maintaining international peace and security and human rights.
9. World Diabetes Day- November 14
World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign focusing on diabetes mellitus. We should be able to sympathise and educate about this life-threatening ailment.
10. World AIDS Day- December 1
Since 1988, World AIDS Day is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.
