Detty December is all we have been hearing. Many folks, including your family and friends, are planning how they are going to paint the town Christmas red. But what they did not tell you, is that most of the funds for these expenditures will be coming out of your pocket.
Earlier, we spoke about how to enjoy Detty December without staining your account. So you already have your plans in place, and if you don’t, you can read the article. But there are family members and friends who unintentionally we come into the picture and truncate your perfect plan if care is not taken.
So, how do you avoid the parasites this season?
1. Lock your account
Set up an arrangement with your accounts at the bank that does not allow you to withdraw more than a certain amount at a particular time, without you incurring interest fees. That way, when friends and family come around to blow your savings, you can tell them your predicament or precautions, whichever way you choose to call it. Bottom line is that they get the message.
2. Separate Detty December expenses
Have your holiday money out. When you have exceeded the amount you set out to spend, let them know you are out. If you try to save face by spending all your income in December, remember that they won’t be there to face the ‘broke’ state with you.
3. Lay down rules
Split bills before-hand and let everyone know what their contributing quota is. Let the rules stand. For example, whoever goes outside the original plan would have to sponsor the extras themselves. Do not give in to cajoling. Be firm and blunt.

You are probably getting the thirteenth month at work and have gone and told everyone who cares to listen how much you’d be having at your disposal throughout December. Humph! You brought this one upon yourself. Instead of going and calling the leeches yourself, be quiet about it.
5. Don’t be scared to say ‘No’
No one will put a gun to your head and forced you to release your money for Detty December. If you cannot or not willing to spare the money, then don’t. It’s yours after all, not theirs. They decided to spend your money. So, make the decision not to let them.
6. Avoid Them
Harsh? If you find it challenging to adhere to the ideas listed above, then you should try avoiding them. If they don’t see you, they can’t get to you. Run!
