A Day In The Life Of A Nigerian Undergraduate

By Ogunkunle Ayotunde

Hi! How’re you? Today is Monday, and I’m going to get you acquainted with a day in my life as a Nigerian undergraduate.

6:00 am- I’m up, without an alarm. Yes! I don’t use an alarm and I’m used to it.  Off to my morning rituals.

7:00 am- I’m ready for school. I’m going out to catch a campus shuttle to school

7:05 am- I’m at the junction waiting for a campus shuttle. Let me tell you, catching a bus is usually one of the greatest hurdles to overcome daily. There are over 30,000 students with the majority living off-campus, the shuttles are almost less than 200 (how do we cope?).

7:25 am- I’m now in the shuttle after much struggle. That’s how we do it here 😊. Nobody wants to miss the attendance of lecturers as they contribute to Continuous Assessment (CA) scores.

7:45 am- I’m now in school. Time for a quick trek from the shuttle part to my lecture room, gosh!

7:50 am- I’m now in the lecture room, ready and just in time for my first lecture. Oh yes, and I got a good seat too.

8:09 am- The lecturer is in class. It is an Electrical and Electronic Engineering Course. This lecturer explains well. We’ll be done in the next two hours.

9:57 am- The lecturer is done and steps out of the class. My friends and I are working on some assignments while we wait for the second lecture. The class is a bit noisy. Well, noisy enough for no one to hear my stomach say ‘time to eat’😂.

10:20 am- It doesn’t look like the second lecture will hold today. Going to the ATM gallery with my friends to get cash- student budget of course. One day, the billions will roll in, but today ‘Press 1 for N1,000’😂.

10:30 am- We are going to get snacks from a supermarket. These supermarkets are just everywhere, the school isn’t shy of land space so go figure. Walking from the lecture room to the school library is almost half a kilometre. It can be tiring!

10:40 am- We are back in the lecture room. Most people are gisting away in their different groups, but as an ‘Efiko’, I have opened textbook 🤦‍♂️.

11:00 am- The next lecturer is here. It is a Mechanical Engineering class. This class will last for an hour. We are ready!

Noon- The lecture is done and the lecturer leaves. Fortunately, the ringing phone didn’t get the lecturer angry this time. No lecture for the next hour and this news is bliss for everyone. We can catch up on pending assignments or basically relax and talk about blockbuster movies coming soon to cinemas.

1:00 pm- We are in the lab for the next lecture. Let’s see what they have for us today.

1:10 pm- The lab is also always rowdy, we have three departments here today; Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and my department, Computer Engineering.

1:30 pm- The lab attendant confirms there won’t be lab work for engineering students today.  I’m very pleased with this. It’s been a struggle all day.

1:43 pm-  We are at the school park ready to leave campus. Some of my friends are heading to the school hostel, but I am heading off-campus. Glad there are no queues today, I should be home early.

2:27 pm- I’m home and ready to make myself something to eat. The usual ‘Spaghetti concoction’ should do the job.

2:30 pm- I’m out to get some ingredients.

2:50 pm- I got home a minute ago and I have started cooking.

3:41 pm- The food is ready. My roommate and I are devouring it. Would you like some? Don’t say I didn’t invite you😀

4:00 pm- I’m about to take a nap, when I wake up I’ll work on some assignments.

5:56 pm- I slept that long?  I’m going to work on my assignments till around 7 pm then I’ll find something to eat. Again!

7:28 pm- I am done with my assignments and I need to eat. I’ll just go across the road to get bread and Akara. Akara means bean cake.

7:32 pm- I am at the bread and Akara place. This place is always rowdy. They usually have a lot of customers. I’ll get my food anyway and leave.

8:00 pm- I’m home and I’m done eating.

8:10 pm- I’m outside my room and enjoying some free time with other students- at least pending when electricity is restored.

10:00 pm- Electricity was restored 5 minutes ago. I’m plugging in my phone to charge so I can do some online courses on Udemy before I sleep.

12:39 am- Time for some shut-eye. I’ll continue with Udemy tomorrow.😴😴😴
