Chioma Chukwuka’s natural hair

Your Natural Hair May Not Look Like Chioma Akpotha’s, But It Can Rock Too!

Have you gone through all of Chioma Chukwuka’s natural hair growth journey and been asking yourself ‘God when’? Sorry to burst your bubble, but with your tight work schedule, every day in the sun, channelling funds towards other meaningful things and not being an ambassador for any hair product, that dream might be very far.

But all hope of rocking your natural hair is not lost. Have you ever heard of the saying ‘Enjoy the moment’? That’s right. Do not wait until you become an Adesuwa Etomi or Nkpe Etim, enjoy the process. This means, love your natural hair as it is now.

Your natural hair is not as problematic as you’ve been told it is. In fact, the reason you went natural was that you weren’t satisfied with the outcome of the retouched hair either. While this article will not teach you about your hair type, it will simply tell you what you need to keep your hair healthy.

How To Maintain Your Natural Hair When You Are Not A Celebrity

So paparazzi and hair brands are not following you about offering free hair products, that’s fine. All you need to maintain your natural hair are:

1. Water

The cheapest commodity for even a 4C hair. Before you spend your money on moisturizers, remember to water your hair. The coils of 4C hair prevent the natural oil produced by your scalp from spreading throughout your hair, causing it to dry out faster. Like your plant, without water, it would die. Have a spray bottle and if you don’t, babe put water in a bowl and sprinkle your hair. No time to waste.

2. Moisturizer

Water isn’t enough to keep your hair from drying out as it eventually dries out. You need a moisturizer to protect your hair from discolouration and falling out. A moisturizer and a sealant will do the trick. And your natural shea butter, coconut oil and the likes will do the trick. Get a good moisturizer that feels good on your hair and there will be no need to break the bank.

3. Detangle

Any hairdresser that combs your hair from the root should be flogged. Do not let them bully and rip your hair, pamper it. When you’ve just finished undoing a pretty hairstyle, do not go right into combing it. Use a leave-in conditioner and water to untangle your hair. When you are ready to comb, do it from the tip and work your way to the root.

4. Use a deep conditioner

Let’s not leave our hair to chance, the weather is harsh enough. Once or twice a month, you should deep condition your hair, leaving it smooth, soft and even shiny. There are many products to buy or even natural methods to try, like using onion juice for an hour and washing it off to reveal soft and strengthened hair.

5. Do not over-wash

Have you ever washed your skin so much that it began to turn white? While you need to keep your scalp and hair clean, your wash day should be spread between 2-4 weeks to prevent dry-out. Wash in sections to prevent tangles.

6. Do not over style

Stretching your natural hair and exposing it to too much heat is just begging for breakage. Rock protective hairstyles instead.

7. Use satin wrap

Do not leave your hair exposed when going to bed. Wrap it up in a scarf or wear your bonnet. We want moisture to be maintained overnight.
