How to Ensure That You Are Employable Before Graduation

The Nigerian job market is constantly changing. New career opportunities are springing up, and everyone is trying to level up to meet the standards required. So, it’s no wonder that most graduates are worried about their prospects of getting a job—and getting one quickly. If you are in this situation, we’re here to help!

Here are some tips to help you ensure that you are employable and fit for the job market before you even bag your degree and turn the tassel.

Learn New Skills

To get a job and thrive in your desired industry, you need to acquire the relevant skills needed. Whatever your chosen field is- Digital Marketing, Human Resources, Software Development or Cybersecurity, you will be at an advantage if you have the technical skills required.

Luckily, upskilling has been made easier, thanks to organizations and services, such as the Google Digital Garage, eDX, Coursera, Hubspot Academy, and more, which provide comprehensive courses that can help you learn all kinds of skills. You can learn these skills, even while in school, to give you an edge when you join the workforce after graduation.

Take Advantage of Internship Opportunities

After a tough and draining semester, you might decide to spend your long holiday cruising, resting and having fun, which is totally understandable.

However, it would be a great idea to dedicate at least a month to an internship program. While on school vacations, search for internship opportunities and apply to them. Also, participate in your school’s SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme) program.

Internships are awesome because they help you to prepare adequately for the world of work before you graduate, make important connections that might be useful in the future and learn valuable skills that make you employable after graduation. Do not forget to include your internship experience on your CV and LinkedIn profile.

Also, ensure that you record all the essential parts of your internship experience— the work you did, skills you learned, contributions you made, achievements and more!

Attend Relevant Events

These events equip you with the knowledge and skills—taught by experienced professionals— that can help you get ahead and increase your employability. You can learn essential lessons such as CV writing and interview tips, amongst others.

These events also provide you with opportunities to network and build valuable connections with people.

Volunteer

The Conversation suggests volunteering through your institution or contacting local organizations. You could volunteer for a short-term project or join the team of a non-governmental organization during your vacations. By volunteering, you’ll be acquiring lots of skills, gaining work experience and most importantly, helping to create change in your community.

Research

The best way to gain knowledge and stay in the loop is by doing some research. If you desire to join a certain industry or company, do your research. Understand the relevant skills required, connect with top professionals online and acquaint yourself with the essential requirements- such as the minimum grade required or important certifications needed.
