Staying Safe in NYSC Camp Amidst The Coronavirus Pandemic

If you’re a member of the Batch B Stream Stream II group recently inducted into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and you’re presently at your designated centre for the compulsory orientation exercises, chances are that you are worried about your safety in the middle of the pandemic.

While measures are being taken by the organisation to comply with COVID-19 protocols and prevent its spread in orientation camps, it’s essential to take certain precautions of your own, to ensure you stay protected and safe while serving your nation. Here are some preventive measures to take:

Clean Your Hands Often

Ensure you wash your hands often, especially after touching surfaces (e.g. ATMs), sneezing, coughing or contact with people and money. When you’re on the move (which will happen often in camp), you should ensure you take an alcohol-based hand sanitiser (at least 60% alcohol) with you always, to clean your hands.

You should avoid touching your face, especially when your hands aren’t clean.

Avoid coming in close contact with people, no matter how familiar you are. Also, avoid coming in contact with people who are sneezing, coughing or showing symptoms of illness.

Here’s How To Ensure You Have A Successful Service Year

Need to Sneeze or Cough? Do So With Caution

Have some tissue with you always, to cover your nose and mouths while sneezing and coughing and ensure you throw them away immediately after use. You should also endeavour to wash your hands or make use of a hand sanitiser after. In the absence of tissue, you can use the inside of your elbows and ensure you take a bath afterwards.

Wear A Facemask Always

Black Face Mask

You should wear a facemask at all times. However, you should avoid reusing the medical masks– you should always throw them away after use. You should also use hand wash or sanitiser before wearing the face masks and after taking them off. For some more tips on face masks, click here.

If You Feel Ill, Speak to The Officials

If you find yourself coughing, sneezing or experiencing any of the COVID-19 symptoms, don’t panic. Go to the medical centres so that you can be attended to and advised on the next steps. You can also apply for an exemption so that you can monitor your symptoms and ensure that you do not put yourself and others at risk.

Have a great time in camp and most importantly, stay safe!
