The celebration of Christmas and the end of the year is often filled with a lot of fun and memories and this article is poised to make sure that your 2020 ends on the right note.
What can you then do to make this holiday season a fun and memorable one, despite the setbacks of the year? Keep reading!
1. Bon Voyage
Travel to somewhere you’ve never been. You don’t have to break your Flexx account to achieve this. You can still travel around the world in due time. How about a resort? A village with a lot of fun histories and festivals? Oh! The Lekki Conservative Center isn’t a bad idea if you’ve never been there. So many options to pick from our very own country. Go on and explore.
2. Family Reunion
When was the last time you saw Auntie Ann? Is Grandpa still alive? You can gather the family and travel down to the village for a family reunion. Bringing together loved ones makes us feel like we are not alone and that we can bear each other’s burden.
3. Throw a ‘safe’ Christmas party
Get your friends, get the neighbours and play lively music. Three is a crowd and there’s bound to be laughter, munching and drinking. Put the smile back on their faces without blowing what’s left of your bank account. Go dutch if the bill is fatter than your account.
4. Wrap gifts
Hohoho! Santa is here. What better way to make others smile by giving them gifts? You can start with your family. Wrap up something nice and sentimental; not necessarily expensive. Something to say ‘I see you’, ‘You matter to me’. Wouldn’t that be sweet?
5. Share homemade meals
Oh, those beautiful holidays past, when Mama Yewande would cook so much jollof rice, you’d think she was expecting the President and his entourage. The Banga soup and pounded yam were all shared with the neighbours and they were very grateful. It was a nice gesture for those who had their own Christmas food and encouraged them to share theirs too. It was a great kindness for those who didn’t have any festive food to eat.

6. Attend or participate in carols
“On the first day of Christmas”…..You get the drift! Christmas carols are lovely, wouldn’t you agree? All that reminiscing with snow, jingle bells, Father Christmas, and the silent nights. If you can’t join one, you could at least attend one or even organise one. Watch live performances, stage plays and mass choir. Fun!
7. Volunteer or give to a cause
How do you feel about visiting an impoverished neighbourhood and joining a team to clean it up, patch it or educate on hygienic lifestyle? You could join a funfair for kids and make Christmas fun for them. Visit the orphanage or the old people’s home. There are many good causes out there to choose from. Alternatively, you can support a cause. If you can’t be physically present, don’t feel bad. You’ve done your bit to make certain people happy so that’s what matters.
8. Decorate a Christmas tree
Get a Christmas tree and put ornaments on it. If you can’t afford to buy one, decorate the tree next to your house. If you don’t have that either, hang Christmas lights around your house. As long as your environment looks festive, you are ready for the holiday.
9. Be happy
Celebrating the holiday will prove futile if you are still thinking of what you could have achieved in the year if all these unforeseen problems hadn’t occurred. Take comfort in knowing that there is next year to get the ball rolling and no matter how much you sulk about what you’ve lost, you can’t really do anything about it. So, be happy, celebrate life and the good things you still have in preparation for what you are going to get.
