Occasionally, we are obliged to attend one occasion or the other that requires a dress code. It could be a wedding, ceremony, dinner party, luncheon, office get-together, a networking forum and so on. It will be in your best interest to comply with the dress code as it shows you are respectful to the host.
Sometimes, though, one might not understand the code or not be privileged to get the right outfit before the event, thereby foregoing the event or defying the code and putting on anything that comes to mind.
Here are a few dress codes and what they mean;
1. Business
An invitation that states its dress code as ‘Business’ might get you thinking about the clothes you usually wear to the office. But this is a bit more formal. Do you know how you dress up for a multinational job interview? Your outfit should be complete with a suit and tie for males and women should wear skirts and pantsuits.
2. Black tie
It is usually reserved for evening affairs, and even though it is not as formal as a white tie, it still involves a tuxedo for men, with a black bow tie and black shoes. While women wear a floor-length evening gown with heels.
3. White tie
White tie is very formal. It is usually worn at state dinners and award ceremonies. It entails a dinner gown for the ladies and tuxedos with a long jacket, white collared shirt and black patent shoes for the men.
4. Creative black tie
It is formal but comes with a trendy twist. These are the types you see at award shows like AMVCA. They are formal but are accompanied by a dash of elegance and colour.
5. Cocktail
It is festive and fun. A lady can wear a knee-length dress or pantsuit with a blouse or a skirt. The men can pants with a suiting shirt, but ditch the tie.
