The 2019 edition of Primetime Emmy Awards is a global event to recognize excellence in the television industry across different categories- held on Monday, 23rd of September. Top TV stars attended in their best outfits, with gleaming smiles and high expectations.
So, who won what? Here’s a roundup of some of the top categories:
Outstanding Drama Series (Winner: Game of Thrones)
In the previous years, GOT winning ‘Best Drama Series’ would have been met with nods and smiles. However, this year was pretty different. The final season of Game of Thrones received mixed reviews, mostly leaning towards the negative. Fans are still surprised and upset at how anticlimactic it was, with many demanding a reshoot. Did the Television Academy award them the Emmy because it was the final season or did they think it was that good? No one knows. Other TV shows nominated in the same category were: Better Call Saul, This Is Us, Ozark, Pose, Bodyguard, Killing Eve and Succession.
Outstanding Comedy Series (Winner: Fleabag)
It was a pretty tight category but Amazon Prime’s ‘Fleabag’ beat out the likes of Barry, The Good Place, Russian Doll, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Veep and Schitt’s Creek to win the award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Outstanding Lead Actor in A Drama Series (Winner: Billy Porter)
It was a surprise win for Pose’s Billy Porter, as he beat out Bob Odenkirk, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Kit Harington and Jason Bateman to win one of the top awards of the night.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series (Winner: Jodie Comer)
First-time nominee, Jodie Comer, won Lead Actress for her performance in ‘Killing Eve’. She beat out her co-star Sandra Oh and other nominees including Emilia Clarke, Robin Wright, Viola Davis, Laura Linney and Mandy Moore to win the award.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series (Winner: Peter Dinklage)
Peter Dinklage made Emmy history by becoming the first actor to win ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor’ four times. He won for his performance as the cunning Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. Other nominees were Jonathan Banks, Chris Sullivan, Michael Kelly, Giancarlo Esposito; as well as his co-stars; Alfie Allen and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in A Drama Series (Winner: Julia Garner)
In one of the most heated categories of the night, Game of Thrones actresses: Maisie Williams, Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie and Sophie Turner were all up for the same award. The trophy, however, went to Ozark’s Julia Garner. Also nominated was Fiona Shaw.
Outstanding Limited Series (Winner: Chernobyl)
Netflix’s ‘When They See Us’ and HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ were both critically acclaimed frontrunners for this year’s award. The award went to the latter, a miniseries about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Other shows nominated were: Sharp Objects, Escape at Dannemora and Fosse/Verdon.
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries (Winner: Jharrel Jerome)
In one of the most emotional wins of the night, Jharrel Jerome took home the award for his performance as Korey Wise, one of the exonerated five in the Netflix series, ‘When They See Us’. He beat out older actors like Mahershala Ali, Benicio Del Toro, Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris & Hugh Grant.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Miniseries (Winner: Michelle Williams)
Michelle Williams (no, not the former Destiny Child member ?) took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in A Miniseries for her performance in Fosse/Verdon. Other nominees were: Joey King, Aunjuane Ellis, Niecy Nash, Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette.
