5 mistakes to avoid at your first year in the university

You’ve survived the tides of high school, the pomp of graduation and the stress of the tertiary admission process. Congratulations!  However, since you’re new to the tertiary environment, it’s important to watch out for certain mistakes that could negatively affect you in your first year. Some of these mistakes include:

  1. Poor planning and time management

For many students, lack of planning and time management can lead to poor performance in academic. If you don’t want to be one of those, endeavour to have a plan in place and stick to it. Ideally, your plan should cover key areas including study time, social activities, religious engagements etc.

  1. Not establishing a personal connection with fellow students

For students struggling with being in an unfamiliar environment, it might be tempting to hide away in their hostels. This is not very helpful. Try to get familiar with fellow students and make some friends, too. Also, check out organizations, clubs or activities to grow that pool of social connections.

It seems easy enough to check online for notes or assignments, however, what you really missed isn’t posted online. Most lecturers say lots of important things that aren’t included in the notes or assignments; plus, they give hints on probable questions for examinations and tests.

It’s not enough for you to read to pass an exam; you should read for the knowledge. In essence, you shouldn’t just cram but read to defend what you know anytime. This will help you improve your confidence, and gain the respect of others.

Freshmen who spend time with atrocious people may find such negative influence rubbing off on them. So, stay away from bad vibes, and keep company that makes you a better version of yourself.
