Whenever there is an ASUU strike, students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria are left with no choice but to comply and stay out of class. What is more troubling, however, is the uncertainty of the call-off date which makes it hard for students to make plans. If you’re currently affected by the strike, below are a few ways to make the most of your time:
Learn a skill
Since we live in a world where having a university degree may not guarantee jobs, it’s beneficial to adopt a skill in graphic designing, catering, digital marketing, etc. and develop it. The knowledge gained can be a lucrative source of income and keep you busy.
Apply for an internship
There are lots of internship opportunities that you can apply for. To get an internship placement, you could speak to people or check online. This way, you get a chance to add tangible work experience to your portfolio.
Start a business
Entrepreneurship is another activity to experiment with. Start up a small business with little or no capital and watch it bloom into something you never expected. When life gives you lemons, open a Lemon Stand.
Register for online courses
Online courses are easier and faster ways to get an education at little or no cost. There are several courses to choose from. Select the one(s) that suit your interest and fire on. In fact, some courses offer certification after completion.
Volunteer for an NGO
You don’t always have to benefit financially from the activities you decide to engage in during this period. Volunteering for an NGO can be quite fulfilling. Join a CSR organization to keep your charity work more grounded and structured. It could be fun.
Whatever you choose to do, make sure you are never idle. Cultivate the habit of engaging in things beneficial to your personal growth.
