How to start a writing career

Do you love to write and are hoping to build a career out of it, but don’t know how? Not to worry, here are some options you can explore:

  1. Write articles for blogs: You can start by writing for blogs about a topic you care- or have extensive knowledge about and keep it regular. You can set up your own blog or write for existing blogs. Remember, growing your audience will take a while, so you will need patience while you build a sizeable audience, which is when you can monetize your own blog. Alternatively, you can earn money by writing for existing blogs. Not all blogs pay their writers though, so, be sure to ask before starting.
  2. Create content for businesses: Content creators are unique in that they help businesses sell value propositions to a target audience by developing articles that resonate with the brand’s personality and identity. Creating content is critical to marketing and you can start your writing career as a freelancer or as a full-time employee.
  3. Become a book author: Writing books is also a potential money-making activity. Being a successful author requires creativity and ingenuity. It takes understanding the nitty-gritty of a subject matter and telling it in an intriguing manner. It might take time for your books to catch on, but if they are good, it’s only a matter of time before you attract a strong audience. It’s tough being an author, however, with the right topics, promotion and distribution from publishing houses, you have a chance to make money.
  4. Copywriting: Copywriters are the wordsmiths / creative specialists that translate ideas into words for clients. Advertising agencies swam over copywriters to engineer advertising campaigns. This is usually a full-time job that will not only make money, but also give you experience in many areas of writing as well.
  5. Become a journalist: Journalism is about having a nose for news and flair for writing. It involves knowing what goes on in your environment and unbiasedly but critically telling the world about it. You can write articles and news for magazines and newspapers as a full-time job or as a freelancer.
