Safety measures on avoiding incidents in schools

As students, we may sometimes get involved in incidents in school and hostel areas that can be
dangerous. Because your wellbeing is important to us, we’ve compiled some measures you
should take to keep safe.

Lock all doors
Lock your dorm doors as you leave for your lectures or anywhere else, as well as before you fall
asleep when you are inside. This can protect you from stalkers, potential rapists or petty
thieves.

Always tell someone your location
It’s very important to ensure a close friend or family member is aware of your whereabouts at all
times. If you might be staying out longer than expected or not coming back to the dorm,
someone you trust should be aware.

Avoid unnecessary distraction

Try not to text while walking, neither should you keep your earphones too loud while crossing
the streets. Take notice of the people around you and study suspicious movements especially if
you’re out late.

Take notice of the weather
If the rains come out, be prepared with an umbrella and a pair of comfy waterproof shoes that
aren’t slippery. Slip and fall accidents often happen during the rainy season, so it’s a good idea
to exercise more caution.

Always have a flashlight nearby

Power supply can be intermittent, so it’s advisable to have an electric lamp in your room or an alternative source of light,
especially at night.

Turn off switches and sockets

When you are leaving your dorm, remember to switch off electrical appliances like pressing
irons, lights, fans etc. These are some of the major causes of fire outbreaks in hostels and it
pays to be careful.
