HOW TO GAIN YOUR OWN RESPECT
‘Respect yourself’ in Nigerian parlance usually means a warning, and a call to order. However, “respecting yourself” in the real sense is a reminder to place value on yourself. You teach others how to treat you by first treating yourself with respect.
This is because for a lot of us, having imposter syndrome, being a people pleaser, and engaging in negative self-talk is a rite of passage. However, having self-respect helps in bringing back our most authentic selves, improving wellness, and preventing bad habits.

To care more about yourself and show yourself more self-respect, follow these tips
- Know your worth. Understand that you have value, bring value and you shouldn’t entertain any thought/conversation/ interaction that seeks to devalue you.
- Set boundaries. With audacity at an all-time high, it is important to clearly define what you accept and what you won’t. Stay true to your values and don’t compromise on anything contrary.
- Don’t let the opinion of other people control you. Try not to internalize the opinions of others. People’s opinion of you
- Do what you say you will. A big part of showing yourself self-respect is doing the things that you say you will do.

Remember that self-respect influences your relationship with not just yourself but with others. If you do not treat yourself with respect, it will be hard to demand that others treat you with respect
