With mind-boggling designs and artistry, Nigerian designers are undoubtedly taking African prints to the next level. Based on popular opinions, here are top five (5) fashion designers doing the country proud home and abroad:
1. Deola Sagoe
She is the renowned owner of House Of Deola Sagoe. Her launch into the fashion industry took place in 1989 and she has since attracted global recognition. The likes of Oprah Winfrey and Will Smith have recognized her work. Africa.com stated:
“Her signature designs, attitude and elegance, draw their inspiration from fabrics with a traditional Nigerian touch and western aesthetics.
2. Folake Folarin Coker
Creative Director of one of Africa’s leading design labels, Tiffany Amber, Folake has risen to a well-respected level. Her journey began in 1998 in Lagos and has ever since taken a unique turn with the making of beautiful Nigerian traditional outfits. The pacesetter for other fashion designers was quoted on Entrepreneurs.ng, saying:
“We are successful when every other designer who came through us is successful.”
3. Lisa Folawiyo
This is one Nigerian known for incorporating traditional West African textiles, such as Ankara, with modern tailoring techniques that showcase beading and sequin trim. She has her own fashion line and was the winner of African Fashion Award 2012.
4. Soares Anthony
There’s something for the men, too. This young fashion designer focuses on men clothing. He is the Creative Head of Soares Anthony Clothing, creating dapper designer native outfits for the men. On Saturday Magazine, he said:
“I get my inspiration from artwork, colours, environment and nature.”

5. Duro Olowu
With designs that imbibe the rich culture and diversity of the Nigerian people, the Nigerian-born, London-based designer is another remarkable man to reckon with. A quote by Duro read:
“My job is not dictating to women what they should wear; it is presenting them with beautiful options.”
