Let’s meet you (Your name, what you do and where you are from)

My name is Success Onuoha. I’m an entrepreneur and communications professional. I’m from Abia state, residing in Lagos, Nigeria.

How long have you been doing this?

I’ve been doing this since 2017. My story begins in 2017, in a student hostel at Ihiagwa, Imo state. It was here where the first yarn fibre was twisted meticulously in a fine knot into a beautiful pompom, creating the first art piece for enthralled customers to take home.

What inspired you to go into business?

I went into business and founded Yousplashdecors in a bid to make income as a student from my artistic skills. The Yousplashdecors story isn’t the everyday business stereotype. I created handmade artworks using yarns as a hobby and everyone loved it, both family and friends. But they did not want to encourage it because I was an excellent Health student and was expected to continue on that path. Regardless, I registered my hobby in October 2017 and it took on a business structure in June 2018.

What are the challenges you face as a young entrepreneur?

The biggest challenge is access to the right mentorship and support. Also, penetrating the market. This is not the regular artwork for the African home. A lot of sensitization and explanation has been and is still being done to have the concept in the faces of the people.

What was your highest and lowest point since you started this journey?

Highest moment – moments such as this “Flexxpreneur”, whereby the business suddenly receives an unsolicited acknowledgement. It’s a major encouragement, shows that the work being put into the processes is working, I’m always grateful for such moments.

Lowest moments – It’s a creative business. Sometimes when so much creativity goes into a design and strategic work is put into pushing it, there’s so much expectation and when it doesn’t yield as expected, it’s a trigger for low moments.

What do you aim to achieve in the next 12 months in relation to your business?

I hope to train over 1000 women over the next 12 months. Also, to move into Yousplashdecors art gallery.

What are your short- and long-term goals?

Short Term
To create and publish training videos on YouTube, teaching and equipping more people with extra sources of income.

Long Term
To build the YouSplashdecors business recognition through series of awareness and social partnerships.

Which individuals do you get inspiration from and why?

Aunty Mo Abudu. She doesn’t mind being the trailblazer. Being a trailblazer requires gut confidence, the willingness to make mistakes, the commitment to keep trying, and a clear vision which you are willing to drive to reality, even when no other person sees it yet.

How do you unwind?

A couple of things, but top on the list is, I sleep.

What advice would you give your fellow Flexxers who are on this path?

It won’t be easy. If it were, everyone will be doing it. Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Do the best you can with what you know and have today. When you know better, do better. When you have better, do better.
