Now and then, we have moments when we feel awkward and even guilty, for doing things that are completely normal and legal.
If you’ve ever felt like this, check out this list to see which one you can relate to:
When you are asking for money you are being owed
This just feels plain awkward even though it shouldn’t be. Someone borrowed money from you and promised to pay it back at a certain time. The deadline came and you didn’t receive it, so you decided to ask for the money. Even though it’s your money, you still feel guilty for asking.
When you leave a store without buying anything
After walking around the store, looking through items and checking the prices, you end up leaving the store empty-handed, feeling awkward as you walk past the security guard even though you haven’t stolen or damaged anything.
When you finish your exam paper before everyone else
Oh, this one is just weird. You finish your exam papers about 20-30 minutes before the due time and you feel awkward walking up to the invigilator while your coursemates are still writing. On one hand, you feel smart because you finished before others, and on the other hand, you feel like you might have written rubbish because ‘what in the world are other people still writing?”
When you ask for an extra sheet during an exam
That awkward moment when you have to raise your hand to ask for an extra sheet and your other coursemates are looking at you like ‘who is this oversabi?” 😂
Leaving work at the official closing time
If the official closing time is 5:00 pm, you should be able to pack your things by 4:55 pm and leave the office at 5:00 pm sharp, right? Well, for some strange reason, you feel very awkward when we do it, even though you resumed early and you’ve finished work for the day. 😬
Calling an older colleague by their first name
Several companies have a culture that enables people to refer to each other by first name. Even though it’s okay by company standards, you still cringe a bit when you call your 33-year old colleague ‘Shola’ or ‘Toyosi’.
Telling an interviewer how much you want to be paid
The interviewer asks you how much you would love to earn if you are offered the job. You have a number in your mind but you feel awkward saying it out loud because you feel like it’s too much. Omo
Taking a day off work
Have you ever taken a day off work because you were ill or because you had to go for an appointment but felt guilty because you thought the HR or your line manager suspected that you were lying? It’s weird.
Driving past a police vehicle
Do we even need to explain how awkward this is? We’ve all experienced (and still experience) this. The fear. The guilt. The calculated moves. All while you’re innocent.
What are some other moments when you feel awkward while doing something normal?
