A young man concentrating at work 2

Want to Boost Your Concentration While Studying or Working? Try These Tips!

You probably clicked this article because you’ve often found yourself spending time on unproductive activities because you simply couldn’t find a way to concentrate at work.

Picture this: you settle down at your desk and open a blank page to start working. Next thing, you hear your phone buzz. You pick it up and realize someone has shared a funny video with you on Twitter.  You watch it, laugh and join in the banter in the quoted replies. You scroll through your timeline and engage with some of the tweets. You see that one of your favourite new artists has dropped a new music video, so you head over to YouTube to watch it. You watch a suggested video. Then another one.

All of a sudden, you get a text from your team lead asking about the progress of the document assigned to you. Oops. You suddenly realize you are supposed to be working and that you’ve wasted so much time. You can relate, right?

Or maybe you’ve found yourself engrossed in the comments section of a viral post on Instagram for hours when you were supposed to be studying for Mr Agboola’s three-unit course. 😅

Staying focused and maintaining concentration while working can be pretty tricky, especially now that there are more distractions than ever before.

However, with some hacks, you can improve your concentration while working or study. Here are five of them:

Stimulate Your Brain

You can increase your concentration levels by training your brain with certain games and exercises. Games like Lumosity, Peak, Sudoku, Crossword Puzzles, Jigsaw Puzzles, Word Search and more help to improve your concentration. You can also engage in exercises such as doodling.

Establish A Reward Policy

There’s nothing like a fun reward or gift to motivate yourself.  You can decide to buy yourself some ice cream upon the completion of a project or get yourself a new dress as a reward for completing a work course.  By adding a reward, you’ll be forced to concentrate on your work and in turn, you’ll achieve your goals.

Put Your Phone Aside

Believe it or not, your phone is one of your biggest distractions. It’s incredible how such a small device could have so much power over you. To ensure you stay focused, put your phone away for some time or activate flight mode/ do not disturb.

Use Music As A Concentration Tool

Music is a pretty useful concentration tool. “Music activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and the activation of both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory”, says Dr Masha Godkin, a professor at Northcentral University in an article by the institution.

You can choose to play soft and soothing music,  upbeat music or any other type that works best for you.

Exercise your Body Often

An early-morning walk, jog or full workout routine isn’t only a great way to stay in shape; it’s a great way to help you achieve and maintain high concentration levels. Try to include exercise in your daily routine!
