Who is ready to bust some business myth that limits the minds of young entrepreneurs, telling them real success is far-fetched? That’s true. Some folks believe that you can only attain success in your chosen business field if you have some connection.
Where this statement isn’t entirely false (as one can gain quick success with good connections; come on, look at DJ Cuppy, singing ‘Gelato’ and DJing happily), your success is not limited to the bank account of your father or uncles.
Without further ado, we’ll delve right in and bust some limiting business myth!
Myth #1: You have to know someone in high places
Says who? Will it be easier knowing someone in power? Not necessarily. Not everyone who knew someone in power became successful because not everyone in power could render help. Once you have your idea, thank goodness for investors and business pitching platforms, you can make your pitch and sell your stuff.
Myth #2: If it is for you, it will come to find you
Er, how? If you have a dream and you fantasize about it without doing anything, or maybe you share it to a few persons and tell them how the country doesn’t favour your dream, it will one day fade off or someone else who’s ready to get up and do the best they can achieve the same vision. Harsh? Well, life isn’t a bed of roses, toughen up! Procrastination is the murder of your destination. So, please don’t wait for success to come to find you, get it.
Myth #3: You have to be a workaholic
‘Work hard!’ Our fathers would keep saying. Where they and everyone else aren’t wrong to encourage this, it doesn’t necessarily lead to success. Without ridiculing the work of a bricklayer, they have got to be the hardest workers, but we all know they by far not one of the successful entrepreneurs. Whether you put in 12 hours or 5 hours of the day into your dream job, as long as it gets you the desired results, you are good to go. It is called working smart. Which is what most entrepreneurs strive to become today, where they can begin to work a little bit less and still earn a lot of money. We all want financial freedom and peace of mind, don’t we?

Myth #4: Make sure you have an MBA, PhD and one foreign degree
When you watch or read articles on Forbes, you come across under 30 CEOs; among many other categories with a huge educational background with some degrees from Harvard University, it can be overwhelming. But then, you find some CEOs with basic school certificates or whose only educational experience is a B.sc degree in Nigeria with a few added skill acquisitions. The point is that your success is not dependent on your educational background. Your education helps prepare your path into a great success. So, make yourself better for what business you are interested in.
Myth #5: You have to be a people pleaser
This should be as one of the fastest ways to lose your ethics and values. When you say yes to everyone, you start contradicting yourself, because one person can want something and the other wants the exact opposite. To succeed in business, your customers have to love you and the services you offer, but there are also cranky and always demanding customers who aren’t right for your business. You have to put your feet down for these kinds to keep growing your business healthily.
Myth #6: No money, no business
Just like we said when talking about Myth #2, there are investors and business pitching platforms in which you can pitch your idea. If you do an outstanding job and they love it, you can become the next big thing without spending a dime of your money.
