Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What better way to kick off your morning than a wholesome meal to nourish you, keep you alert and help you power through the day?

While the ‘breakfast culture’ in Nigeria isn’t a big deal as it once was, it is still pretty important to us, especially during weekends with the family.

Here’s a ranking of some famous Nigerian breakfasts, in order of least favourite (meh) to favourite (mmm yeah, can we have some more of that?). Check it out:

This is a meal that cuts across all ages; everyone grew up eating this. Bread and eggs work together, and it’s pretty amazing. Adding bacon or sausages and a cup of hot cocoa gives this meal some extra points.

Pancakes are amazing! The only reason this isn’t in the top 3 is that it’s not an inherently Nigerian breakfast. This breakfast is top tier, and that isn’t up for debate. All you need is the perfect recipe to help you achieve the right taste and just the right amount of thickness. Pour some syrup and berries on the pancakes, and you’re in food Heaven. Whew!

Whoever came up with the fantastic idea to pair Akara (bean cakes) and pap (otherwise known as ogi) is a genius who deserves his/ her public holiday. This breakfast is a Nigerian staple and is best eaten on Saturday mornings after chores (Don’t ask me why). Name a better duo; I’ll wait.
