The workplace is a formal environment and should be treated as such. Even though you may have your favourite chat buddies, it’s important that you take some discussions off the office space. Curious about these discussions? See below:
- Family problems
Be it your spouse, your kids or your parents, avoid discussing family problems. It might cause some discomfort, as your colleagues may be forced to pick a side and give their opinions on such a sore subject. Avoid it altogether.
- Health problems
You may be struggling with mental or physical health issues, however, it is best to avoid disclosing details to your colleagues. Keep it discreet and if you must discuss with anyone, it should be a doctor or health consultant. In cases where the health issues may affect your work, you should explain the situation to your supervisor and HR.

- Career goals
What are your aspirations in life? How about your career? These are topics best discussed with close friends and family rather than with a coworker. Because when you share your future career plans with your colleagues, they may question your loyalty, especially if it doesn’t involve them or the organization you presently work in.
- Financial problems
Your current financial status and income is something best kept to yourself. You don’t really hear people talking about how much they have in their account and what they plan on doing with it. The more you talk about money with your colleagues, they may begin to box you into a stereotype based on what you tell them. Although it is nice to chip in one or two saving tips and financial bits of advice, avoid constant money talk.
