When job hunting, the content of your CV is what gets you in for an interview most of the time and as such, you need it to be foolproof. Now, there are tons of articles on what to include in your cv and whatnot but we want to inform you of things that should never see the light of day in your CV/resume.
- An ambiguous objective: If at all you must include an objective, let it be tailored to the particular job you’re applying for. Don’t use generic objectives that says nothing about your career life, direction or your how you plan to add value to the organization. An objective isn’t needed most of the time anyway.
- Bad grammar and typos: This is such a no no, ensure you read, edit, re-read and give someone else to proofread your resume to correct typos and grammars. They project laziness and carelessness and you do not want a prospective recruiter to think such of you.
- False or exaggerated information: Do not include false or exaggerated information in your CV, recruiters have their way of finding out stuff and can tell when information doesn’t add up. They’re always on the lookout for inflated or false qualifications, salaries, previous job titles, and achievements.
- An uninformed referees: If you want to put anyone as a referee in your CV, make sure they’re informed so that they’ll be able to respond favorably when a recruiter calls. The last thing you want is for a recruiter to call your referee(s) and be met with cynicism, forgetfulness or unpreparedness.
- Too personal information: Your CV is formal and should be treated seriously, there is no need to start describing your physical features, adding extra details like best food, sexual orientation or even including a picture (except where stated as requirements for the job).
Any of these things can have your CV disregarded in less than a second, so take great care to avoid them.
