Common illnesses in NYSC camp and how to avoid them

For the majority of Flexxers, the NYSC orientation camp is an environment that you’re not used to. You’ll be involved in some stressful activities that could expose you to certain illnesses and in many cases, the environment is not as clean as your own home. Here are some of the more common illnesses and how to avoid them.

  • Heat Stroke/Sunburn
Except you are in OBS or the Medical Clinic, you will definitely be spending most of your time under the sun. You’ll be instructed to be on the field either for the marching routines or for the SAED (Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development) seminars. You can stay cool in the hot weather by wearing a lighter fabric and carrying a hand fan.

● Malaria/Fever
This one of the most regular illnesses at camp, which is caused by mosquito bites. Ensure you carry mosquito-treated nets, mosquito repellent creams and other items to minimize your exposure to the vector.

● Sprain, Strain, Dislocation and Muscle pull
Your ankles, knees, and wrists may be prone to sprains because of the intensive morning drills and marching routines in camp. To be a true warrior in camp, you must be prepared! Warm up exercises are essential before the main parade. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid slippery or uneven surfaces.

● Body/Headaches
This is very usual when you get to camp, so don't be scared. The rigorous exercises and marching can lead to body aches, headaches, muscle pain, dehydration and more. Take short rests/breaks and lots of energy drinks/fluids.

Frostbites
Frostbites are common in the colder climates of Nigeria, especially in the North and rainforest regions. Camps will get really cold, so if you’re posted to any of those areas, carry thick jackets, glove, and socks with you to camp.

Other illnesses are food poisoning, cold, catarrh and sore throat due to the dust on the field. Go to the camp medic once you start feeling the symptoms of any of the illnesses above.
