We’ve had some awesome TV shows in Nigeria that many millennials can relate to. You might have seen or heard about them, but they were quite popular before the likes of Big Brother Naija, The Voice and others took over the screen.
For the sake of reminiscing and marvelling at what our TV shows used to be like, these are 7 TV Shows we would like to see back on our screens.
1. Gulder Ultimate Search
This was epic. Families gathered in the evening to watch this TV Reality Show sponsored by Nigerian Breweries PLC. It was the first 100% local content reality TV show in Nigeria in 2004. Chidi Mukeme was known for his strictness as a host and he showed no mercy to the campers, both boys and girls who had to find the golden sceptre. Each day was a new task and almost every day was an eviction. The last season aired in 2012 with the winner going home with N10m and an SUV. It was tough, challenging, emotional and entertaining.
2. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire
Adapted from the British series, ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ first aired in Nigeria in the year 2004 and was sponsored by MTN. With hosted by the enigmatic Frank Edowo and just like No. 1, families would gather to watch this one, everyone trying to be smarter than the other. Answer 15 questions correctly to win a whopping sum of N10m (it was substantial money then). The lucky/unlucky contestant had three exciting lifelines(50/50, phone a friend and ask the audience).
3. Star Quest Nigeria
The music reality TV show, Star Quest, which was sponsored by Star has produced major Nigerian stars like Kcee, Klint D’Drunk, Mr Raw. It began to air in 2002 and by 2014, had stopped.

4. KKB Show
The kids weren’t left out. The KKB show provided a platform for children all over Nigeria to come around and showcase their talents. They had dramas, quizzes, competitions, game shows, talks, debate, cartoons and many more. Saturday mornings were always a moment for anticipation and excitement. Even Teni at age 12 was a popular figure on the show.
5. Knorr Taste Quest
If you love cooking, you’d have loved this show. 12 contestants were assembled with renowned chefs like Chef Fregz standing in as one of the judges, to make dishes accentuating their culinary skills and competing for 13 weeks. It was sponsored by Unilever Nigeria.
6. AMBO
Amstel Malta Box Office is a Nigerian Reality TV show launched in 2005 and sponsored by Nigerian Breweries, showcasing different talents. The show produced winning-stars like OC Ukeje and Alex Okoroji.
7. Next Movie Star
It was an audition to stardom for participants. The Reality TV show began in 2004 by Shola Faboji. Many of its alumni are known actors and actresses in Nollywood like Tonto Dike, Uti Nwachukwu, Annie Idibia, Belinda Effah, Moyo Lawal and a host of others. The last season to run was in 2016.
