Seven Themes & Topics We’d Love To See In More Nollywood Movies

Nollywood is one of Nigeria’s biggest exports and it has enjoyed tremendous success over the years. However, we can’t ignore the lack of diversity in storytelling that seems to prevent the industry from genuinely shining and exceeding its current standards.

We’ve got some incredible directors and screenwriters here in Nigeria, and we’d love for them to explore these themes in their movies:

History

History

Incredible movies like ‘October 1’,’ ‘76’, ‘Invasion 1987’, ‘93 Days’, ‘Oloibiri’ and more have documented vital parts of our history as a nation, from our journey independence to the discovery of the first oil well, as well as the sacrifices of specific individuals to contain a deadly virus and more. However, it would be interesting to see more movies chronicling some other vital events in our incredibly rich history, as well as notable figures and unsung heroes.

Mental Health

Mental Health

Nollywood has done a pretty poor job in its depiction of mental health issues, leading to gross misinformation that has shaped the thoughts of its viewers- both old and young. Well, it’s time for redemption. We’d love to see movies that address sensitive mental health issues such as depression, anxiety disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and more, without trivializing or demonizing them.

Music

A black man is playing the acoustic guitar and singing passionately on stage.

It’s quite surprising that there aren’t a ton of musicals released in Nollywood yet, considering music is such a vital part of our lives. It would be interesting to see more musicals, from melancholic movies like ‘Les Misérables’ to exciting films like ‘Chicago’ and interesting ones like ‘La La Land’.

Coming of Age

There aren’t so many Nollywood movies centred around adolescents and their journey into adulthood. Most people can relate to the topics addressed in films like ‘Boyhood’, ‘Juno’, ‘The Perks of Being A Wallflower’ and more because they deal with specific issues most people identify with. It would be interesting to see more movies about growing up in Nigeria, as well as the problems the average adolescent faces.

Crime, Law & Justice

Law and Justice

A group of detectives trying to solve a mind-boggling case and take down a ruthless criminal. Intriguing courtroom drama. A team of expert journalists defying all odds to expose a provocative scandal. Whodunit murder mysteries. There’s so much material to work with, y’all.

Fantasy

Between worlds fantasy concept. A women reaching up into a glowing loop of light. Futuristic women portrait 3d illustration.

Sometimes, we need some escapism from our current reality in the form of some otherworldly movies. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have movies about some people with powers trying to destroy a villain, would it?

Politics

Another great theme to explore is politics. An inside look into the murky waters of politics- The backstabbing, corruption,
ruthlessness, revenge, quest for power and more. House of Cards meets Vice meets Homeland meets The Americans. Talk about quality content.
