Preparing for the rain goes beyond your umbrella and raincoat. During seasons like this, flu begins to spread. People start coming down with cold, cough and catarrh. Most infectious diseases spread by humid climate, heavy rain and windy surroundings.
Examples of these diseases are:
- Pneumonia
- Cholera
- Malaria (Because of water clogging in areas, it will result in breeding grounds for mosquitoes.)
- Typhoid
- Viral fever
- Diarrhoea, etc.
How do we stay healthy and free from these diseases even as it rains?
1. Keep your home and environment mosquito-free
Your environment might be a bit challenging as that would involve neighbours in the community. But you can control your compound and home. Do not allow rainwater to gather in sections of the house so as not to form breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If it can’t be avoided either, use a mosquito repellant.
2. Step up your drinking level
By drinking, we mean water and fluids like orange juice that keep you from dehydrating and reduce the chances of a sore throat.
3. Maintain hand and respiratory hygiene
Using a hand sanitizer or washing the hands clean is the first step to prevent germs and pathogens from spreading. When you cough or sneeze, do that into the inner elbow of your arm. If you sneeze into a tissue instead, discard properly in order to prevent others being as sick as you. Advice others around you and stay away from sick people.
4. Stay warm
Take hot tea/coffee. Avoid cold water. Eat warm food and bathe with warm water. Wear clothes that keep you warm and don’t be tempted to sleep naked at night.
