A New Year Resolution Guide

First of all… Happy New Year!!!

We hope your 2019 was worthwhile. There were times when it went fabulously well and other times when challenges and things didn’t go as planned. Now that we are in a new year, we need to analyse and focus on how to achieve our goals this year.

So pull out your plans and goals for this year and compare with the steps we are going to be listing to enable you to have a prosperous new year resolution.

1. Be specific and not vague

‘I want to lose weight’ – Vague
‘I want to lose 20 pounds’ – Specific

Now you have a specific plan. You want to lose weight and losing 20 pounds will do just that. When we make vague resolutions, we end up not achieving them, after all, if you lose one pound, you might have made progress, but it would not be evident to you not to talk of others observing you. So make specific plans.

2. List it and not tell a story

It’s not a dairy; neither is it a story. It’s not where you pour out your heart and write your wishes. List out the items and be specific to achieve. For example;

– Save 12% of salary every month.

3. Be realistic and not dreamy

– I will make a profit of N7 million by the end of the year.

That is sweet. But you better have a plan to achieve this, or you will be chasing clouds till the end of the year. So instead of putting down ridiculous figures or items that would require only a miracle to be do-able, set out a plan that is realistic and achievable with discipline.

4. Make it measurable and not guesswork

Bodyweight can be measured. Money can be calculated, so can your expenses. Do you know how to use a task manager? What actions can you use to track progress towards these goals?

5. It should be important and not an afterthought

Why do you have or why are you writing a New Year’s resolution? Is it because ‘everyone else is writing one’ or because you genuinely have goals that need to be achieved within the year? If your view of your future is not compatible with this goal, then you will not have the courage to carry it through.

6. Take action steps and don’t just sit

The plan is set. What next? Do you sit on your butt and expect the plans to carry themselves out? Not unless you want to adopt magic. Identify a new action you can take every week to help bring you closer to your goal.

7. Stay accountable

Without this last point, you might end up carrying over some of your plans to the following year. Choose one or two close friends or family members that you can share with every week. Evaluate your progress, note mistakes and set the way forward.

Have you written out your New Year’s resolution yet? Let’s have your comments.
