Music’s biggest night- the Grammys, brought some of the biggest and brightest stars across the globe together to celebrate and honour true artistry and the power of music.
It was an emotional night, as several artists took the stage to receive their first prizes, tell their stories and pay homage to some of the powerful people we had to say goodbye to.
If you didn’t get to watch the event in real-time, here’s a quick recap.
Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle received heartfelt tributes.
The world was shaken to its core when it was announced that basketball legend, Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant had passed in a helicopter crash. The Grammys gracefully honoured his memory with Alicia Keys and Boys II Men taking the stage to give an emotional rendition of ‘It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye’. Also receiving a well-deserved tribute was Nipsey Hussle, who died last year. John Legend, YG, Kirk Franklin, Roddy Rich, Meek Mill and DJ Khaled took the stage to perform a medley of his biggest hits.
Burna Boy didn’t take home his first Grammy
When Burna Boy’s first Grammy nomination for ‘Best World Music Album’ was announced, it felt like a win for Nigeria as a whole. The honour solidified his status as one of the rising global stars of the decade. However, while many stayed awake to see if Burna would bring home the coveted prize, they were quite disappointed to see that he didn’t. The Grammy went to Angelique Kidjo, one of the continent’s biggest stars for her album ‘Celia’. The three-time Grammy winner took the stage was kind enough to give Burna Boy a well-deserved shoutout.
Alicia Keys slayed her hosting duties
15-time Grammy award-winning artiste, Alicia Keys hosted the event last year and she was so good, the Recording Academy contacted her to host the event again, this year. She took on her hosting duties in good form, paying homage to Kobe Bryant and helping to make a mournful day into a somewhat happier one by sharing words of wisdom and singing some soulful tunes.
Billie Eilish swept up the four major categories
Billie Eilish had a breathtaking year in 2019, hitting #1 on the charts with her album and her hit song ‘Bad Guy’. The 18- year old was nominated in six categories and won the four biggest awards of the night- ‘Song of The Year’, ‘Record of the Year, ‘Album of The Year’ and ‘Best New Artist’. The star is now the youngest person to win the top four honours and the youngest person to win ‘Album of the Year’, since Taylor Swift.
Demi Lovato made a powerful return
Demi Lovato took the Grammys stage for her first performance since her nearly-fatal overdose incident in 2018. She performed ‘Anyone’- a brutally raw and emotional ballad about her dark struggles, (which she recorded four days before her incident) and received a standing ovation for her incredible rendition and powerhouse vocals.
