7 interesting facts about money you should know

Money makes the world go round and also makes us happy. We all love spending money and having some in our accounts but there are some things about money that we don’t know

  1. Before paper and metal currencies, the cowry (shell of a sea snail) was the longest and most widely used currency in history. Some regions still use it till date.
  2. Bill Gates is the world’s richest man with a net worth of about $89 billion while Aliko Dangote remains Africa’s richest man at $14.2 billion.
  3. The Naira currency is only 43 years old, it was introduced in 1973. We were using Cowries, Britain’s Pound Sterling , Shillings  and kobo before 1973.
  4. The naira was N 0.62 to a dollar in 1976, N 21.9 to a dollar in 1996, between 128 and 129 to a dollar in 2006, N 304.5 (CBN rate) in September 2016 and currently 314.75 to a dollar.  
  5. There are 180 different currencies being used around the world today and recognized by the United Nations.

  6. The British Pound is the world’s oldest currency still in use, it dates back to the 8th century while the newest currency in the world is the Sudanese Pound which was made official on July 18, 2011.
  7. Paper money was invented by the Chinese in 9th century A.D. Initially, they called it “flying money” because it could easily blow away in the wind due to its very light nature.
